Hunmongjae Lecture Hall

Hunmongjae is the lecture hall built by Sir Haseo Kim In-hu at the foot of Baekbangsan Mountain in Jeomamchon Village, Sunchang in 1548 (the 3rd year of King Myeongjong’s reign). Hunmongjae was further up from the present location when it was first built by Sir Haseo and then burnt during the Japanese invasion in 1592. Jayeondang Kim Si-seo, the 5th generation descendant of Sir Haseo, restored it under the name ‘Jayeondang’ around the original site around 1680 but the lecture hall fell into ruin.
After that, his descendants and Confucian scholars restored the lecture hall in Jeomamchon. Moreover, Eoamseowon Confucian Academy enshrining Sir Haseo, Kim Si-seo, Songgang Jeong Cheol, and Yulgok Yi Yi was built near the lecture hall but demolished due to the decree of the Confucian Academy Abolition by enacted by Heungseon Daewongun (Grand Prince) in 1867 (the 5th year of King Gojong’s reign). Gradually declining through the colonial era, Hunmongjae was finally burnt down during the Korean War. On November 9, 2009, Sunchang-gun rebuilt it in the present location in order to revive the academic achievement and spirit of Sir Haseo and to inherit and develop such achievements and spirit, and to review the historic values and to educate people about traditional culture, including etiquette and Confucianism.
