Hyangga Recreation Area

Hyangga-ri Recreation Area is naturally made in Hyangga Village in Daega-ri, Pungsan-myeon, Sunchang-gun, the halfway point of the Seomjingang River, where the river winds around the foot of the mountains. The residents call Hyangga-ri Haengga or Haengga-ri. The water of the Seomjingang River is called the fragrant water. Okchulsan Mountain near the river is called Gasan, meaning the beautiful mountain. So, the area is named Hyangga.
From long ago, writers, artists, and unemployed aristocrats with female entertainers enjoyed a boat ride in the Hyangga-ri Recreation Area because of the beautiful scenery. Along the Seomjingang River, where clear water serenely runs, low hills stretch out. A wide sandy beach of about 2km in length is along the river. A variety of plants and trees including old pine trees and rocks in fantastic shapes are in harmony with the scenery. The river is about 100m wide. Hyangga-ri Recreation Area is famous for its fishing site, as well as the marvelous scenery. In particular, big Chinese lake gudgeons are caught in large quantities during autumn.
8 railway piers rammed in the river near the recreation area are the remnants of a railway that was meant to connect Sunchang and Namwon, but suspended during the colonial era. The Sky Walk Section with reinforced glass in the middle was made using this bridge as a bike path. The mineral spring near the recreation area contains a number of minerals, including iron.
