Purposes
Jangseung, Korean traditional totem poles, are spiritual symbols of ancestors originating from farming culture and folk beliefs. The Churyeong Jangseung Festival aims to keep and inherit the shaman ritual of the village around Jangseung, in order to form the village into a tourist attraction showing the most Korean features and to contribute to the development of the community. The village head, Yun Heung-gwan of Churyeong Jangseung Village, the folk artist, and traditional culture inheritor, settled down in Seoma-ri, Bokheung-myeon, Sunchang-gun and started e Jangseung in order to inherit the ethnic spirit doing personal artistic activities. As the number of Jangseung increased, Jangseung Village became famous by word-of-mouth and the number of visitors increased. At first, Yun Heung-gwan operated Churyeong Jangseung Village and held the Jangseung Exhibition alone. After that, he held the Churyeong Jangseung Festival together with the Youth Club of the village from October 13 to November 13, 1995.
