The name of the temple was originated from the story that the great monk Muhak prayed for 100 days at the temple to make Lee Seong-Gye the King of the Joseon Dynasty. There is a story engraved on the monument that Lee Seong-Gye visited the monk who prayed for him and had lunch at a farming house. He never forgot the taste of hot pepper paste he had at the house. In addition, he ordered to bring him the paste after he became the King.

The national monk Sungje built the temple in 624 (35th year of King Mu’s reign during the Baekje Dynasty) and the monk Gakun repaired it in 1392 (the first year of the King Taejo during the Joseon Dynasty). The temple was completely burned down during the Korean War and restored in 1957. Moreover, 15 volumes of Wolinseokbo were found in 2000 and were designated as a national treasure. Under the temple was a 600-year-old Ginkgo tree, which was said to be planted in 1392.
